Securing Your Furniture
Whether you’re living in an earthquake or hurricane prone zone, or perhaps you’re preparing for a baby to arrive, you want to make sure you keep your furniture safe and secure. Falling furniture is one of the leading cause of accidents at home, both to adults and children (not to mention pets). That’s why there are certain things you can do to ensure your furniture is secure.
What to Secure
First, you may be wondering, what should you secure? Anything large and has the potential to tip over should be secured. Entertainment centers wall units, china cabinets, and heavy shelves are just some examples. If you have furniture or appliances on the wall or ceiling (like ceiling fans or A/C units) these should be secured as well.
How to Secure Furniture
Straps and brackets are the best ways to secure furniture and other items that may tip over. Wall straps, for example, can be places behind furniture so they don’t look ugly. One part of the strap is drilled into the wall, while the other end is secured to the furniture piece. A bracket, on the other hand, is attached to the wall using a stud. These are removable, so you can easily move furniture to clean or to change the position of your furniture.
Other tips
There are other ways to prevent furniture from tipping over. First, don’t overload shelves or the entertainment center’s wall units. Also, keep small kids away from these pieces of furniture and teach older ones not to climb them. Finally, buy heavy furniture and shelves that are sturdy and well made.
